World of Medicine

“Anesthesia” is the Greek word for loss of feeling. Dr. William Morton was the first to use ether when pulling a tooth. While the patient was unconscious, he was able to focus entirely on the job. James Young Simpson, who pioneered the use of chloroform, was a Scottish doctor. Interestingly, the use of chloroform became popular after Queen Victoria used it while giving birth. In 1665, Dr. Richard succeeded in a dog to dog transfusion. Then in 1667, Jean Baptiste Denis accomplished a lamb to boy transfusion. This was great. Although people still sadly died after transfusion, because it wasn’t until 1901 that Dr. Karl Landsteiner discovered blood types. Joseph Lister was the one who drove the use of antiseptics to kill bacteria. All these amazing people contributed to the world of medicine.
